Stop The Steal Protest: Washington Gears Up For Latest Protests, Calls 340 National Guard Troops
The Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia, along with 340 District of Columbia National Guard troops, are gearing up for Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s pro-Trump demonstrations with Congress set to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s election victory.
Thousands of people are expected to demonstrate in support of President Donald Trump's claims that the election was "rigged." Mayor Muriel Bowser may implement a curfew for Wednesday when the official results of the Electoral College are announced.
Trump tweeted the time and date for the Stop the Steal protest. There have been similar demonstrations since Biden was elected president in November.
Over 30 people were arrested at a December rally in Washington, D.C. There were reports of stabbings and sporadic violence, as protestors clashed with counter-protestors.
Some Trump supporters took to social media to confirm they will attend the event. There have also been many on social media who want Trump to accept the results of the election.
Bowser had received criticism from conservatives for not calling in the National Guard during Black Lives Matter demonstrations.
Amid concerns of violence, police have issued warning that carrying firearms is illegal.
Far-right groups the Proud Boys, Women For America First, Eighty Percent Coalition and The Silent Majority have announced they will attend.
Proud Boys’ leader Enrique Tarrio said some of his members may be dressed “incognito,” for reasons unknown. In November 2018, the FBI designated the Proud Boys as an extremist group.
“We will not allow people to incite violence, intimidate our residents or cause destruction to our city,” Bowser said at a press conference.
