A deputy in North Carolina pulled up near a stranded motorist to help him but he tried to steal the patrol car instead. The man was arrested immediately.

The unidentified off-duty police officer was returning home in a patrol car recently. He was driving in the outer belt of I-485 between Providence Road and Lawyers Road when he noticed a disabled vehicle in the left lane causing traffic congestion, according to the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

The deputy had a brief conversation with the driver and called for traffic assistance from the Mecklenburg County authorities in order to push the vehicle, which was out of gas, off the roadway.

The driver, identified as JeJuan McArthur, 22, left his vehicle and sneaked into the deputy’s patrol car. He “repeatedly pushed the patrol car’s gas pedal and attempted to drive away but was unable” because of the transmission lock, the report added.

The deputy got hold of McArthur and took him into custody. Matthews Police arrived shortly and arrested him. McArthur was charged with felony attempted larceny and driving while impaired. He appeared before a judge who has given him an unsecured bond.
