Stranded Woman Survives 6 Days In Snowy Wilderness By Rationing Yogurt, Eating Ice
A California woman miraculously survived in the wilderness after being stranded in snow for six days by rationing on a 6-pack yogurt and eating ice, authorities said.
Sheena Gullett, 52, of Little Valley, was left stranded in her vehicle after it got stuck in the snow in the densely forested area near Little Valley on April 14, the Lassen County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
Gullett was driving with her friend 48-year-old Justin Lonich to Little Valley when their vehicle got trapped by the blizzard on dirt roads off Highway 44. The duo who got stuck in the wilderness spent the night in the car. But as the car battery ran off the next day, they decided to walk to the Highway to get help.
However, Gullett got separated as she fell behind when the soles of her shoes broke off, and Lonich went ahead. When Lonich came back to check on Gullett, he could not find her due to the heavy snowfall.
Three days later, Lonich made it to the Highway and hitched a ride into Susanville where he reported Gullett missing, CBS Sacramento reported.
The Sheriff's office soon began to search for Gullet but did not make much progress because Lonich could not provide many details of the path he walked through, as he was unfamiliar with the area. The heavy snowfall further hindered the search, the officials said.
However, almost a week after Gullett got trapped, the search team located her inside the vehicle on April 20. Gullett came out of her car very emotional, but she was uninjured, the Sheriff's sergeant said.
The officials later found out that Gullet survived on a six-pack of yogurt, eating one each day and feeding herself with ice as she had no water to drink. Gullet said one of those days, she even spotted a search helicopter flying overhead, but they could not find her due to the dense woods.
"The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office Command Staff commends the efforts of all personnel involved in searching for and locating Sheena. Through their efforts, Sheena was found safe and is now back home," the news release added.
