  • The last season was released almost three years ago in July 2019
  • Netflix unveiled downloadable artwork of the four locations in new season
  • Show creators Matt and Ross Duffer said season 5 will be the last of the series

The horror series "Stranger Things" is returning for a fourth season and will be split into two parts, series creators Matt and Ross Duffer said Thursday.

The Duffer brothers released an open letter on the Netflix website revealing that the first part of the highly-anticipated season 4 of the hit sci-fi series will drop on May 27, and the second part will be released a little over a month later, on July 1.

Ardent fans have been waiting for almost three years for the show to return since the last season was released in July 2019.

"Stranger things 4 was the most challenging season yet, but also the most rewarding one," the letter began. "Given the unprecedented length, and to get it to you as soon as possible, Season 4 will be released in two volumes. Volume one will release on May 27th; Volume two will release five weeks later on July 1st."

The show’s executives continued, "Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things. At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but — as you’ll soon see for yourselves — we are not hurling toward our finale. Season 4 will be the penultimate season; Season 5 will be the last."

Series fan @DCFilmdom tweeted a copy of the letter from the Duffer Brothers and wrote, "An open letter from the Duffer Brothers, creators of @Netflix 's @Stranger_Things, concerning their plans for the show's future, season 4's two-volume release schedule, and how they're going to end things on their own terms..."

The Duffer Brothers also teased potential spinoffs of the horror drama with elements of sci-fi and said, "There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things: new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes."

To highlight the return of the show, Netflix unveiled downloadable artworks that represent the four locations of the upcoming season.

Season 4 begins six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. The protagonists are separated for the first time and are back in high school. Meanwhile, new supernatural threat surfaces which, if solved, might finally bring an end to the chaos that the alternate dimension Upside Down brings, the streaming platform said.

On Wednesday, Netflix tweeted a photo of an upside-down billboard that read, "Every ending has a beginning."

The cryptic message brought excitement to many viewers but it also frustrated many others who responded to the tweet and asked if the show would ever return to the streaming platform, given the long wait for the new season.
