Stray Dog Seen Carrying Body Of A Newborn Inside Hospital Compound; Authorities Open Investigation

In a shocking incident, a stray dog was seen carrying the mauled remains of a newborn infant near a government hospital. The video of the gory incident soon went viral on social media, following which authorities launched an investigation.

The incident happened in the Indian city of Bhopal last Wednesday, reported Deccan Herald.

Local media reported that a sanitation worker of the hospital spotted a dog inside the hospital compound with what looked like human remains between its jaws. The animal dropped the remains after the worker chased the dog with a stick.

On realizing it was a half-eaten body of a newborn, the worker alerted the hospital authorities. The body was shifted to the morgue for autopsy.

The video of the animal biting into the body was captured by an unidentified person. The footage went viral on social media, evoking public wrath.

After drawing people's attention, hospital authorities issued a statement saying it had nothing to do with the incident. "The baby was not born in the district hospital. Sometimes, people don't bury the bodies of newborns properly, and dogs manage to dig them out," District Hospital civil surgeon Dr. DK Bhargava told Deccan Chronicle.

He said the hospital authorities have alerted the police, adding that many people resort to dumping bodies of infants in the garbage. He also said that the hospital will conduct an internal investigation.

A similar incident occurred inside the hospital last year, wherein the body of an infant was spotted being devoured by stray dogs. Locals claim that this is the fourth such incident in the past two years. Reports added that the hospital, which treats nearly 400 patients daily, faces a shortage of doctors and other health personnel.

Two months ago, an Indian city of Madurai reported a similar incident wherein a stray dog was seen carrying a severed head of a baby. The incident came to light after a boy spotted a dog carrying "something strange" in its mouth. He got curious and chased it. The dog eventually dropped the baby’s severed head on the roadside and fled.
