A 21-year-old student in Delhi, India, has been arrested after he attacked his teacher with an iron rod over the weekend, police said.

The class 11 student, identified as Lalit, was accused of using the metal rod to strike the unnamed male teacher after the latter asked the 21-year-old to “sit properly” during class at a boys' senior secondary school in Ranhola Saturday morning, newspaper The Times of India reported.

Lalit, who reportedly had failed twice and was repeating the grade, disrupted the class, prompting the teacher to make the request and ask the student to refrain from creating a nuisance, a report by India Today said.

The attack left the teacher with critical injuries, according to the outlet. He is now undergoing treatment at Rathee hospital.

Police were able to record a statement from the teacher.

Lalit was later taken into custody following a complaint from the school’s management, officials said.

A case under Section 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against him.

Lalit appeared in court and was sent to 14 days in judicial custody.

A similar incident happened at a government school in Saket in late 2018 when a 12-year-old student attacked his teacher with an iron rod.

The teacher had found a foot-and-a-half-long metal rod in the student's bag and threatened to inform the boy's parents of the discovery, police said. Additionally, the teacher scolded the student for keeping the metal rod in his bag.

The teacher later confiscated the rod and kept it on his table.

"The boy picked up the rod from the table and tried to take it back. When the teacher saw this, he tried to take it back from the student. The boy then attacked the teacher on the face and head, causing injuries above the man’s right eye, ear and head," then-deputy commissioner of police Vijay Kumar was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

The student then fled from the class and scaled the school's boundary wall, eyewitnesses said.

The teacher was taken to All India Institutes of Medical Sciences hospital, where he underwent treatment.

Police later booked a case under Section 308 of the IPC against the student.
