An Indonesian man was arrested Monday for killing his girlfriend after finding out that she was pregnant.

The incident came to light Saturday after the cousin of the 21-year-old woman found the victim lying motionless in her home with stab wounds on her body. Police were called to the scene who declared her dead. Police said the unnamed victim “was found covered in blood in her bedroom.”

An investigation was launched and police soon found the kitchen knife used in the murder at a riverbank near the victim’s home. Police detained the victim’s boyfriend, identified as 21-year-old Ridhayatul Khair, for questioning when he arrived at her funeral Monday. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime.

“He admitted to investigators that he had killed the victim. He said the victim had said she was four months pregnant and wanted him to take responsibility. The victim threatened to tell Ridhayatul’s family about the matter. He became enraged and murdered her,” police said, adding that the accused and the victim were students at Makassar State Islamic University (UIN).

Meanwhile, the accused could be charged with premeditated murder. He may get a death sentence or life imprisonment if found guilty.
