A former student of North Boone High School in Poplar Grove Rockford, Illinois, claimed she coerced a teacher into believing he was going to die of cancer before she began a sexual relationship with him.

She testified in a courtroom Tuesday it was her actions that led to the sexual relationship between the two and not those of the former science teacher, who was also a soccer coach. The relationship between the girl, identified only as EG, and 54-year-old Scott Brady lasted for about a year from December 2015 to December 2016.

It was during her sophomore year that she met Brady and since both soccer and science interested her, she began texting Brady, who almost immediately asked her to stop it. She said Brady was married at that time and he asked her not to text him since it was inappropriate.

But soon after, they started texting on a regular basis especially after the girl broke up with her boyfriend. By July 2016, their texting took a new turn when Brady suggested they paint their naked bodies. In August that year, Brady even proposed to the girl. This came months after his wife found a note from the girl, which in turn led to Brady telling her he wanted a separation. They divorced in February 2017.

The girl, who is now 20 years old, convinced Brady he was going to die of cancer and “took advantage” of his unfortunate diagnosis. “I convinced him he was going to die. It took more manipulation than anything. On my part, I took advantage of what I knew,” she said.

In November 2016, the girl told a detective from Boone County that she and Brady had sex at least six times between July and October. However, she changed her statement recently saying, they had sex at least twice.

“I was ambushed by them and forced to say something,” she said. Brady, in his testimony, denied having sex with the girl until after she moved in with him on Dec. 15, 2016 — soon after her father disowned her. He also resigned from the school the same month. “She came to me. I told her she was welcome. I had a spare bedroom.”

Around the same time, Brady said he discovered a mass on his testicle and was diagnosed with skin cancer, and denied having sex with the girl during the alleged period partially due to his health issues.

Brady’s defense attorneys claimed the prosecutors got the timeline of the relationship wrong. They said the girl was of legal age when they had sex and no crime was committed because she wasn’t a student of his at the time. EG was taking advanced classes at a nearby college and didn’t attend North Boone High School then. Though she did assist Brady with the boys' soccer team she wasn’t in his science class, they said.

When Brady was arrested in 2017, court records showed the girl was 17 and 18 years old during the alleged incidents. The age of consent in the state of Illinois is 17 but Brady was charged due to his position of authority over the girl.

If convicted, Brady faces between three years and life imprisonment for criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal abuse. He was scheduled to appear in court for closing arguments Thursday afternoon, the results were not yet made public.
