A 16-year-old Georgia High School student is on life support after being shot in the head by another student while waiting at a school bus stop on Tuesday.

The victim has been identified as Timothy Barnes Jr, by his mother, LaToya Nicholson, according to NBC's 11 Alive in Atlanta.

The shooter has been identified as Serar Shakiib Abdi, 17, and he has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault along with carrying a weapon during the commission of a felony, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The shooting occurred around 6:30 a.m. in the Saddle Shoals neighborhood in the Atlanta area, police said.

Barnes is in critical condition. "He’s on life support and it’s up to me to take him off life support. He’s brain-dead at this moment but they are trying everything they can to keep him here," Nicholson said.

Both of the students attend Gwinnett County Schools according to officials.

The students’ high school Principal, Shane Orr, sent an emailed statement to families regarding the shooting.

“Again, while this incident did not occur at school, it does touch all of us in the Central community-- our students, families, staff members, and community. As always, we appreciate your support of our students and school and ask that we all be there for each other during this difficult time,” he wrote.

Investigators believe that the shooting was due to an ongoing dispute between the two involved. Lt. Parker confirmed that "The two had some sort of disagreement in the past. They know each other from school and had some sort of conflict recently," he told CNN.

Abdi is currently being held at the Gwinnett County Jail.
