Subaru Recall 2021: Repairs Are Needed On These 165,000 Vehicles Over Engine-Stalling Concerns
Subaru has recalled over 165,000 vehicles due to a fuel pump issue that could cause engine stalling while the vehicle is in motion and could lead to a crash.
The recall affects certain 2019 to 2020 Ascent SUVs, 2018 Forester SUVs, 2018 to 2020 Impreza hatchbacks and sedans, 2018 to 2020 Legacy sedans, 2018 to 2020 Outback SUVs, 2018 to 2019 BRZ coupes, and 2018 to 2019 WRZ sedans.
The 2018 to 2019 Toyota 86 models are also a part of the recall as it shares components with the Subaru BRZ.
The problem in the recalled vehicles stems from a low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank that may fail. Drivers may notice that the engine is running rough, shaking, or making unusually loud noises before a stall is about to occur. Drivers may also see the check engine light illuminate on the dashboard instrument panel, or in some cases, the vehicle may not start.
To repair the issue, Subaru dealers will replace the low-pressure fuel pump free of charge.
Impacted Subaru owners are expected to be notified about the recall by mail starting on Sept. 13.

A Subaru spokesperson told Consumer Reports that there have been no accidents or injuries related to the recall.
The notice from the automaker comes after an earlier recall for fuel pumps on some Subaru vehicles that was issued in April 2020 that also caused engine stalling.
At the time, Subaru said it would repair the affected 2019 Impreza sedans and hatchbacks, Outback wagons, Legacy sedans, and Ascent SUV models by replacing the fuel pump free of charge.
