Sugar Ray Leonard hailed his fellow multi-weight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez as pound-for-pound king and said that he “likes what he sees” in him.

An array of boxing greats and personalities were impressed by Canelo’s success thus far. Prior to defeating Russia’s Sergey Kovalev, a fighter who is two weight-classes ahead of him, the Mexican boxing star has already proven that he is one of the best boxers to ever step inside the ring.

Leonard is one of the few champions who held different belts in different divisions. And just like what Canelo is being regarded at this point, Leonard was also once considered as the pound-for-pound king.

In a brief talk with Elie Seckbach of EsNews, Leonard commented on Canelo’s most recent performance. According to the legend, Canelo looked “very impressive” against Kovalev. However, Leonard admitted that he has no idea why some Mexican boxing legends such as Juan Manuel Marquez and Erik Morales are not convinced with Canelo’s victories.

Leonard addressed Canelo being the current pound-for-pound champ and based on his assessment, “he likes what he sees” in Canelo at this point.

“Canelo has improved (in) every fight. He’s gotten better and better and I like what I see,” Leonard stated.

Another “Sugar” was also pleased with Canelo’s rise in boxing. Sugar Shane Mosley once said that his former foe has already cemented his name as “pound-for-pound’s best.” Mosley emphasized that Canelo is at his peak and world champions will find it “very hard to beat him.”

“When I fought hi he was 20 years old so he was like 29 right now so he’s still young. And now I think he has reached his peak. It’s gonna be very hard to beat him. He’s a bad boy,” Mosley said about Canelo.

“I think Canelo is the best, Pound-for-Pound’s best right now,” Mosley added.

Meanwhile, Canelo’s next move is what fans really want to know. After becoming the new WBA light heavyweight champ. The “redhead” champ is now linked to some of his former rivals Gennady Golovkin and undefeated champ Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Mayweather managed to outbox Canelo during their first meeting but just recently, the champ claims that a “different fight” will happen should a rematch will come to fruition.

“It’s different now. I’m different fighter. I think he’s good too but I’m a different fighter now. Maybe (it will be a) different fight,” Canelo said about Mayweather rematch.
