Suns' Kevin Durant Trade Doesn't Make Phoenix NBA Championship Favorites
The Phoenix Suns are viewed as the Western Conference's top contenders after agreeing to a trade for Kevin Durant, but they aren't the NBA championship favorites. The Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks still have better odds to win the 2023 NBA Finals.
The Kevin Durant trade gives the Suns +460 odds to win the NBA championship at FanDuel Sportsbook. Phoenix remains behind Milwaukee, which has +420 title odds. The Celtics are the clear favorites with +280 odds.
Just prior to the Durant trade, the Suns had +1800 championship odds. Phoenix moved past the Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Clippers and Denver Nuggets. A few days after trading for Kyrie Irving, the Dallas Mavericks are ninth overall at +2400.
The Nuggets had been the favorites in the West. Back-to-back MVP Nikola Jokic has led Denver to a 4.5-game lead atop the conference on the day of the trade deadline. Now, the Nuggets are fourth in the league with +700 championship odds.
The Suns have +200 odds to win the West. The Nuggets are second at +300.
With a 30-26 record, Phoenix is the West's No. 5 seed. The Suns are two games behind the No. 3 seed Sacramento Kings. The No. 9 seed Warriors only have one more loss than the Suns.
Durant has missed a month with a knee injury and might not return until late February. The 13-time All-Star joins a roster that has dealt with its share of injuries during the 2022-23 season. Devin Booker just returned to the court, having missed 26 games. Chris Paul has been limited to 35 games and looks to be in a different stage of his career.
The Suns went 64-18 in last year's regular season. Phoenix finished eight games better than any other team, only to be eliminated from the playoffs in embarrassing fashion. The Mavericks beat the Suns 123-90 on the road in Game 7 of their second-round series.
Durant and the Brooklyn Nets were swept by the Boston Celtics in the first round of the 2023 playoffs. When Durant requested a trade from Brooklyn in the summer, Phoenix was reported to be his preferred destination.
Prior to getting hurt, Durant was an MVP candidate. The two-time Finals MVP is averaging 29.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game. Durant is shooting a career-high 55.9% from the field.
The Suns arguably have the league's best tandem in Durant and Booker. For the second straight season, Booker is averaging a career-high 26.8 points per game. Booker finished fourth in the 2022 MVP voting.
The Bucks beat the Suns in six games in the 2021 NBA Finals.
