Super Bowl Odds: Dallas Cowboys, Brock Purdy's San Francisco 49ers Among Top Contenders
For most of the 2022 NFL season, the Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles have been viewed as the top Super Bowl contenders. With just a month remaining until the playoffs, the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers are making a bid to join that group.
Dallas and San Francisco both have +900 odds at FanDuel Sportsbook to win the Super Bowl. The Cowboys are tied for the second-best record in the NFC. During Brock Purdy's brief time at quarterback, the 49ers have played as well as any team in football.
Only five teams have better than +1000 Super Bowl odds. Buffalo (+380) is the Super Bowl favorite as the No. 1 seed in the AFC. Philadelphia (+450) isn't far behind in the NFC and still owns the league's best record. Kansas City (+450) has the same record as the Bills and has reached four straight conference championship games.
Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers have played in two of the last three NFC Championship Games. The season-ending injury to Garoppolo raised questions about San Francisco's chances of winning the conference. After two games under center, Purdy looks like someone who can lead the 49ers to the Super Bowl.
Purdy outplayed Tom Brady in the 49ers' 35-7 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. The final pick in the 2022 draft completed 16 of 21 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns, in addition to rushing for a score against Tampa Bay. In Week 13, the 49ers beat the Miami Dolphins 33-17 as Purdy took the majority of the snaps.
Garoppolo has his limitations under center. Surrounded by arguably the league's best group of playmakers, Purdy is showing signs that he can take the 49ers' offense to even greater heights. Because San Francisco has the league's No. 1 defense, Purdy makes the 49ers Super Bowl contenders if he can just be an average quarterback
The Cowboys' defense is right behind that of the 49ers, giving up the second-fewest points in the NFC. The Houston Texans gave Dallas a scare in Week 14, but the Cowboys escaped with a 27-23 victory. The Cowboys needed a late fourth-quarter comeback to avoid the biggest upset of the season to the one-win Texans.
Dak Prescott threw a pair of interceptions and had his worst game since having surgery on his thumb. The Cowboys are 6-1 since Prescott's return. Prescott could be the most reliable quarterback who plays for an NFC contender.
Jalen Hurts has been the conference's best regular-season quarterback, but he was abysmal in last year's postseason. The Minnesota Vikings are on their way to an NFC North title, but Kirk Cousins is well-known for playing poorly in big games. Even if Tom Brady leads the Bucs to the NFC South championship, Tampa Bay doesn't appear to be a threat to win the Super Bowl.
The 49ers defeated the Cowboys during the wild-card round of last year's playoffs.
