'Super Smash Bros Ultimate' Director's Cryptic Tweet Sparks Speculation
KEY POINTS
- "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate" fans are always looking out for new DLC characters joining the roster
- Fans are now wildly guessing who the next character will be following a tweet from the game's director
- Some suggested characters from “Professor Layton and the Unwound Future” and “Crash Bandicoot 4”
“Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” fans are now wildly speculating about the next character to join the game's roster after game director Masahiro Sakurai tweeted a cryptic post.
Nintendo's “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” currently has one of the most diverse rosters of characters in any fighting game. While it features classic characters from Nintendo franchises such as Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and Bowser, it also welcomed the addition of some interesting figures from games coming from other game companies.
Since the game has already built a reputation for welcoming non-Nintendo characters into the fray, fans can't help but hope to see their favorite character from another franchise joining the roster. A new tweet from “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” director Sakurai simply illustrates that.
What happened?
Sakurai recently tweeted an image of two watches against a blue background. The director didn't include any caption to the tweet but merely uploaded a photo of two pocket watches, each of them showing a different time.

While the tweet could be referring to anything, “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” fans thought it was a teaser providing hints regarding a certain character that might be added to the brawler game in the future and started sharing their theories, Comicbook noted.
Some Twitter users claim that a new stage, “Tick Tock Clock,” might be added to the brawler. This particular stage comes from “Super Mario 64” and “Super Mario 64 DS.”
New characters?
Other speculations include characters from other games, including the following:
Someone from the “Crash Bandicoot” series
Some Twitter users speculate that a character from “Crash Bandicoot 4” might be added to the game since the game features some time manipulation. One user noted that one of the game's characters, N. Tropy, has helmet clocks that point in the same direction.
I didn't find out the reference, but I noticed that N. Tropys' helmet clocks are always pointing in the same direction (for the respective sex).#SmashBrosUltimate #SmashBros #SuperSmashBrosUltimate #SSBU#Crash4 #CrashBandicoot #CrashBandicoot4 #CrashForSmash pic.twitter.com/F3NXS2la7j

Someone from “Chrono Trigger”
A Twitter user pointed out that the clocks Sakurai posted “[look] like the gateway portal from Chrono Trigger.”
So: This looks like the gateway portal from Chrono Trigger, the clocks if you go left to right, appear to be rewinding. Even still, Crash 4 involves time manipulation..so that's my tinfoil hat message of the day. pic.twitter.com/5sfJ1ZJsqh

“Professor Layton”
Another Twitter user posted the photo of another game, “Professor Layton and the Unwound Future.” The Twitter user didn't provide any explanation for the speculation, but a photo of the game's title and cover image might provide enough clues.
