  • The new ARMS fighter will join over 80 playable characters in the game's roster

“Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” will debut a new ARMS fighter via livestream on June 22.

Nintendo of America posted the news on their Twitter account with the livestream expected to run approximately 35 minutes long to be presented by Masahiro Sakurai, director of “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.”

A subsequent Tweet stated that no other news will be announced during the livestream set for 3 p.m. BST and it will instead focus solely on the upcoming ARMS fighter, NME notes.

Developed by Bandai Namco Studios and Sora Ltd., “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” was published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch and is a crossover fighting game released in 2018. It features a wide variety of game modes, including a campaign for single-player and multiplayer versus modes.

“Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” features over 80 playable fighters, including everyone from all previous “Super Smash Bros. ” games, alongside several newcomers. The roster ranges from Nintendo mascots to characters from third-party franchises. The most recent playable characters added were Terry Bogard from SNK’s “Fatal Fury” series and Byleth from “Fire Emblem: Three Houses.”

As of March 2020, the game has already sold over 18.84 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling fighting games of all time.

Nintendo revealed an ARMS character would be coming to "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate" during its Nintendo Direct Mini. According to NME, this will mark the first character to come with the game’s Fighter Pass 2. The new pass was revealed earlier this year and will come with six additional fighters, new stages, and more music as each fighter releases.

Very little has been revealed about Nintendo’s plans for the rest of the year as the company has yet to showcase a full Direct presentation. The company appears to be content to let rivals Sony and Microsoft hog the recent headlines with presentations of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X dominating the gaming news cycle.

“Paper Mario: The Origami King” was recently announced and is expected to launch in July. This past week also saw the announcement of “ Pokemon Snap” during a Pokemon Presents livestream with The Pokémon Company due to reveal a “big project” during yet another upcoming stream on June 24.
