Mehcad Brooks as Guardian
“Supergirl” executive producers Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller explain why Season 2, episode 20 is a big hour for Mehcad Brooks’ James, a.k.a. Guardian. The CW

Is James (Mehcad Brooks) giving up his nighttime gig as Guardian anytime soon?

In the “Inside: Supergirl” featurette for tomorrow’s Season 2, episode 20 of the Melissa Benoist-led series, executive producer Robert Rovner reveals that James struggles with his vigilante job after realizing that there are actually some people out there who are scared of Guardian.

“It’s a big episode for James,” Rovner says of next week’s installment. “All season long, he’s been moonlighting as Guardian and he’s been realizing he’s not been inspiring hope the same way that Supergirl (Benoist) does. And people are more afraid of him than see him as somebody that can inspire them.”

In a sneak peek from the episode which is included in the featurette, Guardian helps a woman being attacked by a man. Guardian knocks the assailant out, but the woman — instead of thanking the vigilante for what he did — tells him to stay back before ultimately running away for her life.

“That woman was more afraid of Guardian,” James tells Winn (Jeremy Jordan) after the discouraging incident. “I mean Supergirl, Superman (Tyler Hoechlin), they’re making a difference. They’re changing hearts and minds. They inspire people. Guardian inspires fear.”

But as Guardian grapples with the future of his vigilante gig, a female alien wreaks havoc in National City. “We have an alien terrorist that attacks the city. It’s a Phorian, which is a very powerful telekinetic alien,” Rovner says in the featurette. “They think there’s gonna be more but the alien disappears.”

As revealed in the synopsis for the episode, James gets a lead on the Phorian’s address, but instead of finding the culprit, he finds a very scared boy named Marcus (Lonnie Chavis). “James found the alien’s son, this young boy who is played by Lonnie Chavis who is from ‘This Is Us,’” Rovner says in the featurette. “He’s so cute and such a wonderful addition to the cast. [He’s] a really wonderful actor. And it’s great to see Mehcad and Lonnie play off of each other.”

“They work so beautifully together,” adds co-executive producer Jessica Queller. “It’s a really powerful relationship and we’re so grateful to have such a wonderful young actor.”

In an interview with TVLine last month, David Harewood revealed that his character, J’onn, has a beautiful moment with James in the episode. “There’s a lovely moment that I have with Mehcad, about accepting who you are,” Harewood shared. “James is reluctant to step in and help somebody, and I persuade him, as a hero, that sometimes you have to go against your own instincts and do something that’s right, as opposed to what you think might be right.”

When asked if there’s a chance J’onn will recruit James to the DEO, Harewood said: “I really want to see James in the DEO. Winn has been a real find in the DEO, so maybe one day we can get James in there, as well.”

“Supergirl” Season 2, episode 20, titled “City of Lost Children,” airs on Monday, May 8 at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
