‘Supergirl’ Season 2 Spoilers: Mark Gibbon Cast As Superman Villain General Zod?
Did “Supergirl” just cast one of Superman’s greatest comic villains?
According to Bleeding Cool News, the CW series tapped Canadian actor Mark Gibbon to play the role of General Zod. Although the network and producers of the show have yet to confirm the casting, the website reported that as of Thursday, Gibbon was filming scenes for Season 2 on the set of the series.
In the comics, General Zod is a former Kryptonian military general. He was exiled to the Phantom Zone for treason thanks to Jor-El’s efforts. When General Zod survived the destruction of Krypton, he then swore revenge against Jor-El’s son, Superman.
As previously reported, Tyler Hoechlin is reprising his role as Superman in Season 2 finale, so if General Zod’s casting is true, then viewers can expect a showdown between the Man of Steel and his nemesis in Season 2, episode 22.
Mark Gibbon, who is best known for his role as Irgun in 2004’s “The Chronicles of Riddick,” is no stranger to superhero projects. In fact, he’s been part of several gigs from both DC and Marvel over the years. He appeared in four episodes of “Smallville” and played an ops leader in an episode of “Arrow.” On the Marvel side, he served as a voice actor on animated shows “Iron Man: Armored Adventures,” “Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes” and “X-Men: Evolution.” Interestingly, Gibbon also had a minor role in 2013’s “Man of Steel,” in which Michael Shannon played the role of General Zod.
“Supergirl” returns from its month-long hiatus with Season 2, episode 18 on Monday, April 24 at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW. According to the synopsis for the episode, Lena’s (Katie McGrath) former boyfriend Jack Spheer (Rahul Kohli) comes to National City to introduce his newest breakthrough in nano-technology. To show her support, Lena attends Jack’s conference with Kara. But when Kara sees Snapper (Ian Gomez) at the event, she decides to tap into her reporter skills and question Jack about his invention.
