Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) and Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) are returning to National City at the right time.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, “Supergirl” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said that Superman and Cat’s reappearance on the CW series comes at a perfect time for Kara (Melissa Benoist).

“This is Kara’s darkest hour,” Kreisberg said of the final two episodes of the season. “[So] it’s perfect that she has both Superman and Cat, who are these great stabilizing influences in her life — Cat, who tends to have a good handle on what Kara needs, and Clark has a pretty good handle on what Supergirl needs.”

“She needs them both desperately because she’s faced with some truly awful decisions to make in the finale and choices that affect her both as Kara and as Supergirl,” Kreisberg explained. “Having her surrogate mother and surrogate brother there to make these decisions, it’s good to have them there.”

During a different chat with TVLine, Kreisberg pointed out that “Supergirl and Kara have different storylines” on the show, and in the finale, both aspects of Benoist’s character are going on separate journeys” with Superman and Cat giving emotional support to each of the hero’s personas.

Kreisberg told Comic Book Resources that the Man of Steel is “incredibly crucial” in the finale, but his appearance won’t overshadow Kara. “In our show, Superman has been [a superhero] for a decade, and he’s pretty comfortable with being Superman,” the exec producer said. “A lot of interpretations are of him getting his start, at the beginning. For us, he’s so comfortable in the role, but the show is called ‘Supergirl,’ so our Superman is here in service of Supergirl. He’s her family. He’s her conscience. He’s her mentor.”

Superman will make his return in the Season 2 finale, where General Zod (Mark Gibbon) — one of Man of Steel’s greatest villains in the comics — is set to make his series debut. So it’s likely that viewers are going to see a showdown between the two.

As for what fans can expect from Cat’s return, Kreisberg told TVLine that the founder of CatCo Worldwide Media “gets to do some things she’s never done before” in episodes 21 and 22. In Season 1, Cat usually stays in her office as Supergirl fights baddies outside. But in the upcoming return of the media mogul, Cat actually has a scene with Rhea (Teri Hatcher), which is apparently the big baddie of the season.

“There’s a great standoff between Cat Grant and Rhea,” Kreisberg told E! News. “It’s amazing to me to be on set when you're watching Teri Hatcher, Calista Flockhart … yelling at each other. It’s pretty cool. … It really is a woman’s world on this show and we’re so proud to be able to present that.”

“Supergirl” Season 2, episode 21 — the penultimate episode of the show’s sophomore run — airs on Monday, May 15 at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW, while the Season 2 finale airs the following Monday, May 22 in the same time slot.
