‘Supergirl’ Season 3: Odette Annable On What Makes Reign A Unique Villain
“Supergirl” star Odette Annable said that her character Reign is different from any villain that has appeared on the show.
During a roundtable interview at San Diego Comic-Con, Annable explained why Reign is unlike any baddies viewers have seen on the CW series.
“Reign, as most of you probably know, is a Worldkiller. She was bioengineered in a lab. She was sent from Krypton like Kara (Melissa Benoist) and Clark (Tyler Hoechlin), but her story is going to be different than other villain’s that you’ve seen,” Annable said (via Hidden Remote). “She doesn’t come to Earth to go on a killing spree. She had a very specific agenda that she is out to [achieve] and you’ll see that story unfold throughout the season.”
While Annable didn’t say much about Reign’s mission, the “Pure Genius” alum teased that the character’s journey is “really amazing because it’s kind of a heartbreaking story.” “I think you’ll feel for her,” the actress added.
In the comics, Reign is one of the Worldkillers — aka genetically engineered Kryptonian weapons — created by Supergirl’s biological father Zor-El. Just like Supergirl, Reign possesses superhuman strength and has the ability to fly. Created by Michael Green, Mike Johnson and Mahmud Asrar, Reign first appeared in “Supergirl Vol 6 #5” in March 2012.
Reign’s arrival on Earth was teased at the end of the Season 2 finale, in which it was revealed that there was another baby from Krypton — in addition to Supergirl and Superman — who was sent to Earth before the destruction of their birth-planet.
In the final moments of the finale, several hooded figures placed the Kryptonian baby in a pod which quickly left Krypton before it exploded. “It should survive the journey. It will grow strong on Earth… and then it will reign,” said the baby’s guardian as the pod launched into space.
Aside from Reign, other new antagonists that will be introduced next season include real-estate developer Morgan Edge (Adrian Pasdar), DC villainess Psi (Yael Grobglas) and Maggie’s (Floriana Lima) father Oscar Rodas (Carlos Bernard).
“Supergirl” Season 3 premieres on Monday, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
