Chyler Leigh opens up about her sexuality and how she can relate to her character in “Supergirl.”
Leigh admitted that she could relate to her character Alex Danver’s coming out in “Supergirl.” She shared that her role in the American superhero TV series enabled her to accept her self more.
“When I was told that my character was to come out in season 2, a flurry of thoughts and emotions flew through and around me because of the responsibility I personally felt to authentically represent Alex's journey,” she wrote in a post entitled “Wear Your Pride.”
“What I didn't realize was how the scene where she finally confessed her truth would leap off the pages of the script and genuinely become a variation of my own. IRL. My heart felt like it was going to beat out of my chest each take we filmed, every time presenting another opportunity to get those honest words out of my mouth. Though they don't exactly match my personal dialogue, the heart behind it surely did.”
In “Supergirl” Season 2, Leigh’s character came out as gay. She fell in love with Detective Maggie Sawyer (Floriana Lima). She said the director, press, media, cast and fans told her it was the “most realistic coming out scene they’d ever witnessed.” She has one explanation on how she managed to pull it through.
“And to steal from Alex's words, that's because there's some truth to what she said about me,” Leigh continued.
While the “Grey’s Anatomy” star was proud to represent the LGBTQ+ community on TV, she admitted that some of her friends were not supportive. She didn’t hold a grudge against them because what’s more important is her husband, Nathan West.
“Throughout our journey we've learned to be proud of who we are, no matter the cost,” she added.
In 2017, both Leigh and Lima spoke up how their characters’ romance was so significant to viewers who had a hard time coming to terms with their own sexuality.
“We’re just really humbled by it, very proud of it,” Lima told People.
Leigh said that they never thought that it would have such a big impact. However, she admitted that they wanted it to be a “strong representation” for those who could identify themselves with their charaters. So, they thought hard about it because they wanted it to be “beautifully done.”
