"Supernatural" Season 15 finale aired Thursday marking the end of the Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester) and Jared Padalecki (Sam Winchester) starrer series after a 15-year run. The finale attempted to give fans a perfect ending.
Two episodes before the finale, there came the biggest surprise when Castiel professed his love for Dean and sacrificed himself to save him. In the finale, the Winchester brothers try to adapt to their lives and work on the case their father failed to solve in 1986. Dean is injured by a metal spike during combat with the captivated vampire. They first met the bloodsucker 14 years ago during their first vampire hunting case. A while later, Dean finds himself in heaven reunited with his loved ones.
Meanwhile, Sam lives his life to see old age and die of natural causes. After his death, Sam reunites with his brother in heaven and along with him crosses a bridge that he once crossed in the pilot episode of the series.
Similarly, the two-hour finale featured several such cameos and Easter Eggs paying homage to the Winchester brothers’ journey. Digital Spy listed some of the best Easter Eggs that fans may have missed out on. As per the outlet, Twitter user BbqAny was quick to notice that the Winchester brothers wore similar outfits that they wore in the pilot episode. It was a subtle nod to the beginning of their journey and the relationship they shared as brothers.
The show paid homage to the very season of the series by bringing back the original license plate for their iconic Impala. "Supernatural" Season 15 finale also brought back nostalgia for fans by playing the series unofficial theme song “Carry on Wayward Son.” However, true fans of the series were not surprised by this addition as this score has been played over and over again in every season’s finale.
That’s not all! Screen Rant mentions a few more Easter Eggs that appeared in the final episode of the series titled “Carry On.” In an episode early in the series, Dean’s undying love for pies was revealed. Somehow, the show makers also found a way to pay tribute to Dean’s love of the baked goods when he is seen eating six slices of the pie by himself.
For one last time, the demon-hunting brothers also used aliases inspired by rock singers when a police officer calls Sam to inquire about Agent Bon Jovi. There was also mention of Agents Singer and Kripke paying tribute to series creator Eric Kripke and producer Robert Singer.
The CW series has finally concluded with an ending that eventually saw the Winchester brothers together. The concluding storyline received mixed reactions from fans. However, fans would agree that the finale felt like an “old-school” episode, as promised by showrunner Andrew Dabb in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
