‘Supernatural’ And ‘Vampire Diaries’ Could Have Had A Crossover
“Supernatural” is gearing up to have a “Scooby-Doo” crossover in March, but a very different crossover was a possibility many years ago. It seems the Winchester brothers had the opportunity to meet the Salvatore brothers on “The Vampire Diaries.”
“TVD” showrunner Julie Plec revealed that The CW approached the writers about a potential crossover in the early days of the vampire drama. “In Season 1 or 2 of ‘Vampire Diaries,’ they approached us about maybe doing some kind of ‘Supernatural’ crossover,” Plec revealed during a recent Q&A session (via KSite TV).
It makes sense. After all, both shows were hits for The CW that involved supernatural elements as well as brothers who would die for each other. However, fans know that their mythology is very different, which is ultimately why Plec and executive producer Kevin Williamson were against the idea.
“Kevin and I were like, ‘Absolutely not, because we are vampires and werewolves. We don’t have demons. We don’t have Hell. We don’t have the Devil. We don’t have any of that stuff! It’s like two completely different supernatural universes!’” Plec explained.
While Plec, who is directing an upcoming episode of “Riverdale,” was very protective of the show at the time, she realizes it may have been a cool experience to see Damon and Stefan meet Dean and Sam. “But now looking back with some distance, that would have been fun,” she admitted.
To be fair, Plec barely had time to crossover her own shows. “The Vampire Diaries” eventually led to the spinoff “The Originals,” but there were only a few episodes where the Mikaelsons ran into the Salvatores.
It seems like there will be more crossover now that “TVD” is over. Caroline (Candice King), a regular throughout eight seasons of “Vampire Diaries,” is set to appear in several episodes of “The Originals” Season 5, which premieres April 20.
Meanwhile, “Supernatural” is still going strong in Season 13. The boys will be getting animated in the “Scooby-Doo” crossover, titled “Scoobynatural,” which airs March 1. The episode was actually written nearly a year ago. Stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki recorded the audio last spring before the animation process started.
