Cholesterol, a waxy material that flows with the blood, is essential in the creation of cell structures and cell membranes. It also performs an important job in the fusion of hormones, vitamin D, and many other substances.
In the case of synthesis of the cell membrane, it helps in regulating membrane fluidity over an array of physiological temperatures. Having too much cholesterol, however, may be bad for your health as it heightens your risk of developing serious cardiovascular conditions.
Having high levels of cholesterol can cause the development of fatty deposits in the blood vessels on the walls of the arteries. This accumulation leads to the narrowing of the passageway of the blood, which results in serious complications.
The Cause
There are a lot of factors that contribute to the increase in your blood cholesterol levels. Overindulging in foods containing high amounts of saturated fat can cause your cholesterol levels to spike up. Many animal products contain lots of saturated fat.
Trans fats, which can be found in some commercially baked crackers and cookies, as well as microwave popcorn, can increase your levels of cholesterol. Full-fat dairy products and red meat have also been proven to increase cholesterol levels.
High levels of cholesterol cause the formation of plaque within the artery walls. This changes the makeup and structure of the arterial lining.
A Refreshing Solution
If you have high levels of cholesterol, you need to take action to lower them to normal levels. There are many ways of doing this, and one of them is taking a particular supplement.
Studies have shown that drinking a refreshing cup of green tea regularly can significantly lower cholesterol levels. The healing benefits of green tea have been recognized since ancient times, and modern science has proven that the invigorating beverage is indeed beneficial to your health.
Recent and past studies have proven that green tea may indeed be used in treating several medical conditions. One of these conditions is high cholesterol.
Green tea contains lots of antioxidants that aid in fighting free radicals in the body which damage healthy cells. It is rich in polyphenols, believed to have anti-viral, anti-cancer, anti-bacterial, and antioxidant properties. This helps in lowering your cholesterol levels.
The Recent Study
Researchers from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition analyzed the cholesterol-lowering properties of green tea. The study involved 1136 volunteers and 14 eligible randomized managed trials.
At the end of the study, researchers found that those who consumed green tea lowered the LDL-cholesterol concentration considerably by at least 2.19 mg/DL. It did not affect the amount and structure of HDL cholesterol.
According to Dr. David Moran, findings of this recent research should be confirmed in bigger studies that involve longer follow-ups for the cholesterol-lowering capabilities of green tea. He admitted, however, that for many centuries, green tea has been used in treating various ailments and is recognized as a beverage with therapeutic value.
