A surfer was bitten on the foot by a shark at New Smyrna Beach in Florida Sunday, WESH, Orlando, reported. There were apparently hundreds of people in the water when the victim was attacked just after 11:30 a.m., Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue Capt. Aaron Jenkins said. The water was apparently filled with bait at the time of the attack, which is probably what drew the shark to the public beach near the Ponce Inlet Jetty.

The victim, a 24-year-old Gulfport man, was bitten on his left foot. He suffered a few lacerations and minor puncture wounds, local news site WKMG, Orlando, reported. It was the eighth shark bite in Volusia County this year.

He was taken to the hospital in a personal vehicle, not by ambulance, and then released, Central Florida News 13 reported.

Other beachgoers spotted the shark in the water, WESH reported. Officials warned of jellyfish in the water after several people suffered stings. There were also strong rip currents.
