Suspect Arrested In Nanny Cam Attack On NJ Mother
Police have arrested a suspect in the brutal attack of a New Jersey mother captured by a nanny camera. NBC 4 New York reported that Shawn Custis, 42, was arrested in upper Manhattan by both New York and New Jersey police officers Friday afternoon. The arrest came a brief time after Custis was identified by authorities as a suspect.
Authorities say the attack took place while the woman was watching cartoons with her 3-year-old child in their Millburn home, as noted by CBS New York. The criminal broke down the back door and set upon the woman as she made her daughter’s breakfast, the local television station reported.
The nanny-cam video shows the assailant rush into the woman’s living room and punch her repeatedly in the face as her child sits on the living-room couch. The attacker then throws the mother to the ground, continuing to punch and kick her in the head before throwing her down the basement stairs.
The victim told CBS New York that her daughter “watched the whole thing.”
The mother said to protect her daughter, she knew she had to keep her composure during the attack, which left her with a swollen eye, a swollen lip and a concussion. “I knew that if I started screaming, my daughter would too, and I was afraid she would get hurt. I took it. I didn’t cry the entire time,” she said, according to News 12 New Jersey.
The young mother was taken to the hospital after the attack and received stitches near her mouth, NBC 4 New York reported. Authorities believe the man thought the residence was unoccupied. He escaped the home with the victim’s wedding ring and other jewelry.
