Tanya Snyder Named Washington Football Team Co-CEO
The Washington Football Team announced that Tanya Synder, wife of team owner Dan Snyder, has been named the franchise’s co-CEO. The news comes as Washington attempts to change its image and culture in the wake of multiple controversies and little success on the field.
“This team is our family’s legacy,” Tanya Snyder said in a statement. “We are at a pivotal point in the history of this team as we work to become the gold standard of NFL franchises. The co-CEO titles reflect our approach to that effort. It is a natural progression, but it’s important to formally recognize the diversity of opinion and perspective that informs everything we do. In my new role, I’ll be positioned to ensure the core values that are central to our philanthropy permeate the entire organization and bring us closer to realizing our goals.”
It’s been a tumultuous year for Washington, to say the least. Several female employees said they experienced sexual harassment within organization and it was reported that Synder himself was accused of sexual misconduct in 2009. Snyder bought out the team’s minority owners after they unsuccessfully tried to pressure him into selling his majority stake of the franchise.
Washington dropped its name last summer and took up the Football Team moniker. Snyder replaced former team president Bruce Allen with Jason Wright, who became the first Black team president in NFL history.
“Tanya is one of the most important figures in this organization, and that has only become more true over the last 18 months as her involvement has deepened,” Dan Snyder said in a press release. “Publicly, many know Tanya for her incredible and impactful work in breast cancer awareness and her leadership of our charitable foundation. But behind the scenes, she has had a profound impact on the direction of the Washington Football Team. She was instrumental in our decision to evolve the brand and modernize our fan experience – including the entertainment team.”
Tanya Snyder is the third female CEO in NFL history. She had previously headed the team’s philanthropy efforts since 1999.
Washington won the NFC East with a 7-9 record last season. The team hasn’t won a playoff game in 13 years.
Washington has two playoff wins since the Snyders purchased the team in 1999.
