Taylor Swift is setting the record straight on rumors that she recently channeled Princess Diana.
The "All Too Well" singer wore a black off-the-shoulder David Koma mini dress with a slight V-neck when she appeared on "Late Night With Seth Meyers" Thursday to talk about re-recording her latest project "Red."
Swift’s ensemble quickly drew comparisons to Princess Diana’s iconic 1994 revenge dress, designed by Christina Stambolian, with some fans speculating that the singer was sending a message about getting even with a man, whether it be ex-boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal or Scooter Braun, who previously owned her masters.
However, the 31-year-old pop star cleared up the rumors while speaking to Access Hollywood Friday at the premiere of her short film, "All Too Well."
"Oh my god, this is not — I just liked the dress," Swift explained. "It was a black dress I liked."
The "I Knew You Were Trouble" singer said she gasped when she learned about the speculations. But while she made it clear that her dress wasn't an Easter egg, the Grammy winner also praised her fans for their creative ideas.
"They are the best detectives in the world. I love watching their theories," Swift added. "Sometimes, they find things I didn’t even plan. … 95% of the time, I’m planning it, but there [are] times when they’re like, ‘The math!’ And I’m like, ‘Oh my God, the math!'"
Princess Diana wore her iconic black off-the-shoulder chiffon dress when she attended the Serpentine Gallery’s summer party in London in June 1994, just hours after Prince Charles confessed to having been unfaithful during their marriage. According to Kirsten Ehrlich, a keen royal observer, it was a "clever strategy" and was the best example of "fashion politics."
The revenge dress was most recently recreated by Elizabeth Debicki, who plays Princess Diana in "The Crown" Season 5. The upcoming season will premiere on Netflix in November 2022.
Meanwhile, Swift opened up about her decision to reward fans who paid close attention to the lyrics of her songs during a recent interview on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon."
She admitted that she wanted to give them an incentive "because my lyrics are what I’m most proud of out of everything I do" and hoped that more people would read them. Swift also revealed that when she was a child, she used to leaf through CD booklets, read the print and "just obsess over it."
"When it got out of control was when I started to realize that it wasn’t just me that had fun with this, that they had fun with it too," she added. "And I never should have learned that, because then I couldn’t stop, and all I started thinking of was, 'How do I hint at things? How far is too far in advance? Can I hint at something three years in advance? Can I even plan things out that far? I think I’m going to try to do it!'"
