Taylor Swift Endorses Democrats Phil Bredesen, Jim Cooper, Social Media Erupts
Pop superstar Taylor Swift who has been reluctant to speak about politics came out in support of the Democratic candidates contesting for Senate and House of Representatives from Tennessee. Taylor on Sunday put out a statement on Instagram revealing that she would be voting for Democrats Phil Bredesen and Jim Cooper in the 2018 midterms.
"I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent,” she wrote.
In the post, she went against Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn saying the politician's voting record "appalls and terrifies me."
“Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is a woman named Marsha Blackburn. As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn. Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me. She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. These are not MY Tennessee values,” she wrote.
“I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives. Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values,” she added.
Bredesen took to Twitter to thank Swift for her support. “I’m honored to have your support and that of so many Tennesseans who are ready to put aside the partisan shouting and get things done. We’re ready for it,” he wrote.
Swift’s political opinions created a buzz on social media with some supporting her for sharing her views while the others showcasing their disappointment.
Some also went on to say that Swift got political because Kanye West put on the MAGA hat.
Swift has 83 million plus followers on Twitter and a massive 112 million followers on Instagram.
Bredesen was the governor of Tennessee from 2003 to 2011. He was elected in 2002 and re-elected in 2006, becoming the first governor in Tennessee history to win all 95 counties. Before serving as the governor, he was the mayor of Nashville, Tennessee, from 1991 to 1999.
Cooper, on the other hand, is the representative for Tennessee’s 5th congressional district and has served since Jan. 7, 2003. According to his profile, Cooper is known for his work on the federal budget, health care and government reform. Cooper is also a businessman, attorney and part-time Vanderbilt professor when Congress is not in session.
