Teen Calls Abuse Hotline Contemplating Suicide And Reports 'Deplorable' Home, Parents Arrested
A 14-year-old girl in Florida called an Abuse Hotline to report the awful living conditions at home that later lead to the arrest of her parents.
The girl placed the call on Oct. 31 and said that she was contemplating suicide after allegedly suffering emotional and physical abuse by her mother, Flagler County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post. The teenager told the authorities that she was forced to take care of her siblings, who were 6, 8, 9, and 12 years old, as well as three dogs, two chickens and a rabbit. Meanwhile, her parents worked late into the night. She also claimed that she was not being taught during her homeschooling lessons.
FCSO deputies arrived at her home in Water Oak Road, Bunnell, to find it in "complete disarray." The front yard had very tall grass and littered with cans, trash and rusting metals. The porch was covered in bird feces while the chickens roamed freely.
"Every room of the home contained an abundance of animal feces, animal urine, rotting food, roaches, and other flying insects," according to the Facebook post. There was no edible food in the refrigerator save a frozen chicken.
"Some rooms were so littered with trash that deputies were unable to see the floor and their boots stuck to the filth-covered floors," the post read.
There was no running water in the house; the toilet bowl still had days worth of waste. The children told the deputies that they would visit the Bull Creek Fish Camp to take a bath and most of the time, they would not be bathed for days and up to a week.
"This is a traumatic situation for all of the children involved," Sheriff Rick Staly said. "These children were living in deplorable conditions. I am thankful that these kids are now safe from these two individuals who obviously do not know how to properly care for children."
He commended the girl for calling the Abuse Hotline and seeking help.
Police arrested the parents, 42-year-old Betty Nicolicchia-Allen and 33-year-old Dennis Allen on Nov 1 and were charged with five counts of Child Neglect each. They were taken to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility and the bond was set at $5,000.00 bond each.
The children were placed under the Department of Children and Families (DCF) and one child was "taken into protective custody under the Baker Act", the statement said.
