Teen Footballer Dies After Touching Live Power Line With Metal Pole While Trying To Retrieve Ball

A 17-year-old footballer was electrocuted to death in England after tapping a power line with a metal pole while trying to retrieve a ball with it.

Emergency services and police arrived at Euxton Villa FC's ground in Euxton, Lancashire on Saturday evening after receiving information that a teen had been seriously injured. Despite the best efforts of the paramedics to revive him, the teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Emergency services were called to Runshaw Hall Lane in Euxton following a report of a child being seriously injured. Police, paramedics and fire service attended but sadly the child, aged 17, was pronounced dead at the scene," police said in a statement as per Lancashire Post.

According to the investigation, the victim and two other teenagers were trying to retrieve a ball from a pond using a metal pole when it accidentally touched an overhead power line.

"An investigation is underway and remains in the very early stages, but it is believed the children may have touched an overhead electrical line with a metal pole," police added.

The other two teens were also injured in the incident, but their injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening. The names of the three teens were not disclosed by the authorities.

"This appalling incident has led to the tragic death of a young man and my thoughts are first and foremost with his family and loved ones at this time. The family are [sic] being supported by specially trained officers," Yahoo Sports quoted Inspector John McNamara of Lancashire Police as saying.

McNamara added that an investigation is underway and remains in its very early stages. He also asked everyone who has any information about the incident to get in touch with the authorities by calling 101 and quoting log 1241 of March 6.

Meanwhile, Euxton Villa FC tweeted that the ground would be closed on Monday.

"Due to a tragic incident over the weekend please note the ground and the car park will remain closed on Monday (March 8). Our thoughts are with all those affected," the club tweeted.
