‘Teen Mom’ Season 5 Drama: Farrah Abraham’s Return Causes ‘Controversy’ Among Cast

Farrah Abraham, the reality-TV star turned adult film performer, is returning to the place where she started, MTV's "Teen Mom." And while some viewers may be delighted by the news, her co-stars are said to be less than thrilled. Farrah had been booted from the cast ahead of Season 5, but now it's confirmed that she will return to the series.

“There’s going to be lots of excitement from the ‘Teen Mom’ fans and MTV’s fan base as well, so I’m excited to be back!” Farrah announced to Us Weekly Friday.

Series creator Lauren Dolgen revealed to the magazine that “Teen Mom” cast members Maci Bookout, 23, Catelynn Lowell, 22, and Amber Portwood, 24, were upset after learning about their former co-star’s return. The trio reportedly asked MTV last year not to hire the "Backdoor Teen Mom" star. Maci explained the casting snub during MTV's "Ask the Moms" special in October, saying Farrah was no longer welcome on the show because she "made some choices that didn’t really match with what the show was about."

According to Dolgen, the girls still felt the same following the announcement of Farrah's return. “[They] know that she’s coming back. It did create a little bit of controversy that will play out in the series," Dolgen admitted.

So why would MTV purposefully upset the moms by bringing Farrah back? According to Dolgen, the season wasn’t shaping up to be as captivating without a fourth mom on board. “We shot a couple of story lines and there is something about having that fourth story to counterbalance, there’s just a magic to four stories and four different points of view,” she said.

Farrah agreed, adding that she felt her story line was “missing" from the show. She also shared that she felt returning to the program was the best choice for her daughter, Sophia, 5. “I think ‘Teen Mom’ is important for the children and their futures. And I think it holds some good opportunities for Sophia and her future,” she said.

Before Farrah rejoined the show, a trailer for Season 5 was released in October. Between the drama-filled teaser and everything that has happened to the cast in recent months, viewers are in for quite a treat when the program premieres new episodes this spring.

In the upcoming season, viewers will get to see Maci’s new boyfriend, Taylor McKinney. Maci, whose son, Bentley, is 6, recently announced she is pregnant with her second child, a girl, due in June.

Catelynn, who gave up her daughter Carly, now 5, for adoption, is still with boyfriend Tyler Baltierra. The duo welcomed their second daughter, Novalee Reign, on Jan. 1.

Amber, who shares daughter Leah, 6, with ex-fiancé Gary Shirley, will be seen settling back into life following a 17-month incarceration. Her on-again, off-again romance with Gary also will come into play.
