Authorities in Birmingham, England have launched an investigation after an 18-year-old college student was attacked and beaten with a chair by a group of boys inside a fast-food restaurant last week, which left him with a broken jaw.

Ansel Causer was waiting for his younger brother in the McDonald's located in Lower Parade, Sutton Coldfield at around 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 16 when he was attacked by several boys — one of them was believed to have been wearing brass knuckles, the Birmingham Mail reported.

"The 18-year-old had a chair thrown at him and was punched in the face after being approached by around four or five boys who fled the restaurant after the attack," a spokeswoman for the West Midlands Police said.

"At this stage, we believe this to have been a targeted attack," she added.

Causer, who has special needs, noticed a "white" boy come in with two or three others prior to the attack, his 52-year-old mother, Tracey Causer, said.

"This white kid walked past him with another Asian lad and they asked, 'Are you good?'" Tracey, of Sutton's Defence Estate, said.

Ansel was then allegedly attacked by one of the boys from behind with a chair. No one helped him as he continued to receive hits from the object, according to Tracey.

"And then from behind another one has come and punched him in the face, he’s not sure how many times. I don’t know how it stopped," the mother added.

The boys fled after the attack and Ansel contacted his older brother, who then called Tracey and said "something's happened" before adding that Ansel was at the fast-food restaurant.

"When I got there, I saw all the flashing police cars... Ansel looked really pale and shocked. His face was bleeding at the right side of his mouth. I could see his cheek was swollen," Tracey recalled.

"He said, 'Mom, I think my tooth’s gone.' I put my hand in his mouth and then my younger son said, 'Mom, I heard they used a knuckle duster. I said, 'Come on let’s go to the hospital,'" she added.

Since he was suffering from a broken jaw, Ansel was taken to Good Hope Hospital. He was then directed to go to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where he underwent emergency surgery on the night of the incident.

"At the [Queen Elizabeth] they explained all the operation procedures. He would need three plates because of three breaks. They were talking about taking his front tooth because of where the break was and had a zigzag break at the back," Tracey said.

"One of the breaks has gone through a nerve," she added.

Ansel underwent a two-and-a-half-hour operation last Friday and had three metal plates put on his mouth. Additionally, he received stitches in his cheeks and at the front and back of his mouth.

"He's on a liquid diet for two weeks and has to be careful as his mouth bleeds. It's life-changing for him... We don't know if he'll be able to go back on his college course because it's a football course," Tracey said.

"The doctors said when he got punched, they can tell something was used because of the damage to his jaw. It went from right to left," she added.

Tracey now wants her son's attackers, who were said to be mostly "Asian lads," to be held accountable for their actions.

"I want them boys to be found and held accountable for what happened to my son. He’s received life-changing injuries. He will always have these plates and have to be careful," she said.

"Apparently how this has come about is this white kid who Ansel knows from hanging around in Sutton has been bullying others in Sutton and my son has had a shoving match with him... He’s then come into Sutton with other lads and they’ve attacked him," the mother explained.

People with any information regarding the incident have been urged to contact authorities.

"Inquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact us via Live Chat and quoting crime reference number 20/1743921/21. Or you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111," a West Midlands Police spokeswoman said.

McDonald's has issued a statement in response to the incident.

"We are aware of an incident taking place at our restaurant on September 16th and we have assisted the police with their inquiries," the company said.
