An 18-year-old boy in the Philippine province of Cagayan fatally stabbed his older brother after the latter spent his own government cash aid on liquor, police said.
The teen, identified as Jefferson Castro, used a kitchen knife to attack his 43-year-old brother, Ador Castro, in Allacapan municipality's Dalayap district, Philippine Daily Inquirer and Philippine Star reported, both citing local police. It was not clear when the incident occurred.
A police investigation revealed that Ador, a farmer, was castigated by the two siblings' father after Ador spent his local government-issued financial assistance on wine instead of buying food for their family.
Police alleged that Ador attempted to hit their father, but Jefferson intervened, causing an argument between the brothers to erupt.
Ador allegedly tried to attack his younger sibling first with a bolo — a large cutting tool akin to a machete — but Jefferson was able to strike his brother first with a kitchen knife, according to the reports.
The elder Castro sibling was later declared dead on arrival at a medical facility.
Jefferson told investigators that he acted in self-defense. It was unclear if he was arrested or charged over his brother's death.
A similar incident happened in Pinellas County, Florida, in March when a 46-year-old woman was accused of repeatedly stabbing her roommate over an argument involving the former's federal stimulus money.
Samantha Clark was arrested on March 30 after she attacked her 77-year-old roommate Dale Neary with a "common steak knife" earlier that day, police said. She allegedly became enraged during an argument over $60 related to Clark's government stimulus money.
Neary attempted to defend himself from Clark with an aluminum pipe, but Clark continued to attack and stab the elderly man several more times before she fled, according to authorities.
Pinellas Park police officers later arrived at the scene and found Neary with multiple stab wounds to his upper body. He was taken to a local hospital and received treatment for his injuries.
Clark was located by authorities several blocks from her residence and was taken into custody for attempted murder without further incident. She appeared to have possibly been under the influence of narcotics, police said.
