A teenager, who was a student of Grade 8, died after being bitten by a deadly snake inside his hostel Thursday night. Two others who were bitten by the reptile remain hospitalized, local police said.

The incident took place in Government Social Welfare Boys’ Hostel in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The deceased victim has been identified as M.Ranjit Kumar of Dalayipeta village. The other two victims have been identified as E. Vamsi and V. Naveen, the New Indian Express reported. The hostel staff managed to kill the snake. However, the species of the snake was unknown.

Local police said that Vamsi and Naveen are currently under treatment in a private hospital, Vizianagaram. One of the student is said to be in a serious condition, while the other is stable, the Times of India reported.

According to reports, the venomous snake entered the hostel and bit the three teenagers who were asleep at the time. Hostel staff shifted the three students to Parvathipuram Government Hospital, but later moved them to Tirumala hospital in Vizianagaram.

M. Ranjit Kumar died as the venom of the snake damaged the functioning of his organs, doctors at the hospital reportedly said. The other two victims are in Intensive Care Unit under treatment.

Deputy Chief Minister Pamula Puspha Srivani and Joint Collector R. Mahesh Kumar visited the hospital to get their health updates.

In August last year, a 4-year-old boy died within hours of being bitten by a deadly snake. The incident occurred in the city of Kurukshetra in the state of Haryana. The victim, identified by his first name Karan, was inside his house when he was bitten by the reptile. The child woke up at night to go to the bathroom and informed his parents about a snake slithering around.

The child then complained of stomach ache, itching and other complications. He was rushed to a hospital where he died.

It is believed the snake that bit the child was a highly venomous Krait snake. These reptiles are mostly found in Asian forests and farmland from Pakistan to southern China and southward into Indonesia.
