A teenage girl was shot in the chest on Friday night in Chicago by a woman for trying to steal her dog. Both of them are now facing charges, police said.

The 14-year-old unidentified girl from Illinois met 21-year-old Araceli Diaz on Friday at 2300 block of South Drake Avenue to buy the latter's dog, Chicago Police Department, said in a press release on Saturday.

When Diaz handed over the dog and asked her to pay $800, the juvenile pulled a pellet gun and hit her on the head. Diaz then took out her gun and fired at the girl, which hit her in the chest, before fleeing from the scene in a white Cadillac, the Chicago Tribune reported.

"We're not sure where they met initially or how they communicated, but all we do know is that the 14-year-old did show up with other intentions and she pulled out a BB gun," Chicago Police Officer Jose Jara, told FOX32.

Police tracked Diaz to her home in Cicero an hour later with the help of a surveillance video that identified her vehicle. She was immediately arrested, police said.

The woman had a valid Illinois Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card which allowed her to possess a weapon and use it in self-defense. But she was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon as she didn’t have a carry license for the same.

The 14-year-old was transported to a nearby hospital where she was treated for her gunshot wound and was arrested Saturday morning under the charge of attempted armed robbery. She was set to appear in juvenile court on Dec. 9, while Diaz appeared in court on Sunday.
