Ten Hag Sends Out Warning To Manchester United Teenage Sensation Garnacho; Here's What He Said
KEY POINTS
- Man Utd defeated Aston Villa 4-2 in League Cup on Thursday
- Man Utd lost to the same opponents in the league last week
- Man Utd have 23 points from 13 league games
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has sent out a warning to young winger Alejandro Garnacho after their 4-2 win over Aston Villa.
After losing to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday, Manchester United defeated the same opponents in their League Cup meeting at Old Trafford on Thursday. Garnacho assisted two out of the four Red Devils goals.
The 18-year-old has made an impact on the team in very little time this season. In eight appearances, Garnacho has netted a goal and made two assists.
In a post-match conference, Ten Hag pointed out things Garnacho needs to improve his game.
"I think it was good that also when he came on that he showed performance that he has an impact in the game. Quite clear, with two assists, some good dribbles, runs behind, but also some things he has to improve. For instance, when we go for the long ball, don't go for the header with Scott McTominay, go for the second ball," Ten Hag told reporters.
The left-winger contributed with two assists against Aston Villa after coming off the bench in the second half.
When Ten Hag was asked when will Garnacho start playing regularly for Manchester United, the Dutch boss replied," So he still has things to learn but it's quite obvious we are really happy with his development, with his performance tonight and he can contribute to this team. Can he have a regular role? Depends on how his approach, how his attitude, when he keeps working, keeps this attitude, then it's possible."
Earlier in the month, even Bruno Fernandes had backed Ten Hag's assessment of Garnacho's attitude problems.
"He was good but he knows we expect a lot from him. Obviously, he's still really young, he's doing really well. At the beginning of the season, he was not at his best. In the [pre-season] tour he didn't have the best attitude that he should have, and that's why he didn't get his chances until now," said Fernandes after Garnacho scored his first senior goal.
Manchester United are scheduled to next play against Fulham in an away match in the Premier League. The Red Devils will travel to Craven Cottage on Sunday before the international break.
Ten Hag's side is currently placed fifth in the 2022-23 Premier League table with 23 points. They are three points away from the top four and 11 points behind table-toppers Arsenal.
