Tennis: Novak Djokovic Honors International Women’s Day, Fights For Equal Pay
KEY POINTS
- Novak Djokovic pledges support for pay equality in the workforce
- International Women's Day was celebrated last March 8, 2020
- Other players such as Andy Murray have shown support for women before
Novak Djokovic is heralded as one of the tennis greats in the current generation. He has won 17 Grand Slam titles and isn’t looking to slow down anytime soon. He opened the year by being a part of the winning team in the ATP Cup. He then claimed the 2020 Australian Open and he most recently won the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
Djokovic claims that his hot start in 2020 is one of the best in his career. The Serbian hasn’t lost the entire year and continues to win match after match in 2020. His last loss came at the hands of Roger Federer last November of 2019 at the ATP World Tour Finals. Since then he’s won all the tournaments he’s been to and is currently preparing for the Indian Wells.
While the World Number One player continues to develop for the year and the season, he has also taken some time to focus on what’s off the court. Given that March 8 is International Women’s Day, Djokovic shared his thoughts on what the community should be putting their energy on. He is the new endorser of the product Ultimate Software. It focuses on the automation of Human Resources and payroll software services that cater to employees of the workforce.
“I‘ve been surrounded by remarkable women my whole life. Today, I pledge to support every woman in achieving their greatest ambitions,” Djokovic tweeted.
His tweet included the video campaign of the product, fighting to shift the balance of pay equality. It focuses on how people of similar backgrounds and achievements can still have a pay difference merely because of one’s gender.
Other tennis players such as Andy Murray have also supported the fight for gender equality before. He takes the issue seriously and once corrected a reporter in a press conference in the 2017 Wimbledon. The reporter asked about Sam Querrey who he labeled as the “first American singles player” which Murray corrected immediately. “Male player,” he sternly said.
International Women's Day is part of the global initiative of the 2020 Women's Month. The theme for this year is #EachforEqual.
