KEY POINTS

- The cancelation of Wimbledon greatly affected his return on the court
- Former ATP star Tim Henman provides his input regarding the situation
The cancelation of the Wimbledon Championship is one of the biggest consequences caused by the coronavirus. Several tennis players on tour including Roger Federer have taken a blow by this decision. Former ATP star Tim Henman shared that Federer is the most devastated by this key development.
The Swiss legend Federer currently holds the most Grand Slams among all male players with 20 overall as he’s solidified himself as the greatest competitor to step foot on the tennis court. The quality of his career has consistently been elite given how he’s been on top of his game since the early 2000s.
With everything that Federer has accomplished, he has proven to be an icon in the sports world. While he’s currently nursing a knee injury, the recovery from his surgery would have set him up for a Wimbledon return.
It was originally a feasible timetable that can help Federer add more titles to his already illustrious career. He’s a specialist on the grass-court as he holds the record for most championships won in Wimbledon with 8 titles. At his age, nearing forty, he was close to winning another title in last year’s tournament as he and Novak Djokovic endured a classic five-set thriller.
In this unique situation, Henman shared that several players are also affected by this predicament.
"It is the same for everyone. Speaking to other players, someone like Federer coming to the end of his career surely and the opportunity at Wimbledon has been taken away this year," Henman said by way of Tennis World USA.
With the cancelation of The Championships, it will be one Grand Slam opportunity taken away from the very competitive landscape of the ATP and WTA tours. But Henman likes to keep things in perspective on how the coronavirus scare is a bigger worldwide issue.
"It is going to have an impact. It is not ideal but I do think it is very important to keep perspective. It is a delay in tennis, it is a delay in people’s careers but some of them will have plenty of opportunities in the future,” Henman shared.
Although it’s a tough decision to swallow several players including Federer understand the urgency of the tournament to cancel the event.
