Tennis: Roger Federer Reveals His Two ‘Most Exciting’ Players In The Sport Today
Tennis great Roger Federer was mobbed by fans when he was walking around New York City, trying to take pictures with him. The multiple grand slam winner is a sure hit wherever he goes.
In an interview with TMZ Sports, the 38-year old Federer named the two players that he thinks are a big threat to his throne. In a short clip, it was clearly said who were the players that he is referring to.
“There’s a few guys right now. They’re gonna make our lives difficult for us next year,” said the Swiss superstar. Pressed on who are the players that he is referring to, he dropped two names – Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Zverev and Fed faced-off in an exhibition match in Mexico City on November 23 and their match set a new world record for the largest number of spectators in a Tennis match. According to an ESPN article, there were 42, 517 people who watched the event at the Plaza de Toros bullring in Mexico’s capital.
Federer came out victorious in the friendly match against the 22-year old German, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. The record was previously set in 2010 where Belgian Kim Clijsters beat Serena Williams, 6-3, 6-2, at King Badouin Stadium in Brussels, Belgium.
Tsitsipas, the 6th ranked tennis player by ATP, defeated the Swiss star, 6-3, 6-4, in the semifinals to the dismay of fans inside O2 Arena in London on November 16. The loss was the second straight year that Federer came up short in the semis. Zverev got the better of him during their last year’s encounter and went on to win the ATP Finals against then-number one Novak Djokovic, 6-4, 6-3.
The 21-year old Greek went on to win it all, 6-7 (6-8) 6-2 7-6 (7-4), to become the youngest winner in over four decades to win ATP Finals on his tournament debut since John McEnroe.
