Terence Crawford's Real Challenge With Canelo Alvarez, Errol Spence Isn't Inside The Ring

Terence Crawford is determined to take his career to a whole another level at all costs.

Leading to his welterweight clash against Shawn Porter, Crawford was fueled by his thirst to pull off his own version of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s sensational run that saw him become an undisputed champion.

“Canelo, he motivated me in one aspect. He did what he wanted to do in that division,” Crawford said in a press conference before the fight. “He wanted to become undisputed and he made sure that he became undisputed within a year. So, that’s impressive to me.”

“That’s motivation to me to, you know, go out there and get these big fights that everybody been wanting to see,” he continued. “And hopefully, you know, down the road I can do the same thing and become undisputed in the welterweight division.”

What’s even more interesting, “Bud” doesn’t only want to achieve Alvarez’s feat. Apart from it, he has now locked his eyes on a dream showdown with the Mexican superstar.

“Look at Floyd Mayweather; nobody gave Floyd any credit,” the American told ESPN. “They wanted Floyd to fight GGG at 160 [pounds]. I got to fight Canelo next.”

Surprisingly, Crawford was able to take the first step towards his goal as he stopped Porter via TKO to extend his unbeaten record to 38-0.

However, a fight against Alvarez will still not be as easy as it sounds.

While Crawford is indeed one of the best boxers at present per se, he would need more than just a flawless record and his name to lure Alvarez, who is very unlikely to consider dropping down to middleweight again as he sets his sights on a move-up to cruiserweight.

Moreover, Crawford is no Floyd Mayweather in terms of marketing. Thus, it would be a tough challenge for the American to reach an agreement with Alvarez’s entourage as well as the governing bodies of the sport now that Top Rank promotion will no longer be involved in his business.

Crawford has long been frustrated over Top Rank chief Bob Arum’s inability to secure a fight against another champion at 147 pounds in the form of Errol Spence Jr.

Determined to face Spence sooner rather than later, Crawford is willing to do it by himself.

“Bob [Arum] couldn’t secure me the [Errol] Spence fight when I was with him,” Crawford said after beating Porter. “So how are you going to secure me the Spence fight when I’m not with him? I’m moving forward with my career right now and I wish everybody the best.”
