Accident Details
Accidents are quite common in all fields of life. They can occur at home, at the workplace, in the hospital, during transportation, etc. Many accidents are avoidable and happen due to negligence. Proper awareness and safety precautions must be in place to ensure that the risk of accidents is minimal.
Accidents are studied extensively to figure out their root cause. Accident analysis helps to understand the safety precautions to be followed to prevent further accidents in the future. These analyses are conducted by a wide range of experts like forensic scientists, engineers, health and safety advisors, etc.
One of the most common types of accidents is a road accident. A road accident refers to any unfortunate event that takes place on the road. Such accidents can cause damage to property, roads, vehicles and can quite commonly result in loss of life.
Real-World Example of An Accident
One of the worst road accidents in the world took place on March 20, 1995, near Mobile, Alabama. The accident resulted in over 200 vehicles damaged and injured over 90 people. This accident was due to extremely low visibility to the drivers caused by a thick fog.
The Charkhi Dadri mid-air collision took place on November 12, 1996. The crash took place between Saudia Flight 76 and Kazakhstan Airlines Flight 1907 over Chakri Dadri, India. All passengers and crew on board died during the accident. It remains the world’s deadliest mid-air collision. A thorough root cause analysis was conducted on this accident that showed that the Kazakh pilot was flying lower than the assigned clearance altitude. In the wake of this disaster, the aviation industry implemented several changes, one significant being the mandatory use of the Traffic Control Avoidance System (TCAS).
Types of Accidents
Work Accident: Any accident caused in the workplace. According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), more than 300 million accidents happen at work every year. The construction industry is one of the most dangerous work industries. It contributes heavily to the total number of accidents and deaths occurring in the workplace every year.
Road Accident: Accidents that occur during transportation on roads. A road accident usually occurs when a vehicle collides with another vehicle, pedestrian, animal, or a stationary object like a tree, pole, building, etc. A road accident can result in serious injuries and damage to property. Studies have found that counties with low income have higher road accidents every year. This higher number of accidents can be attributed to the fact that such counties don’t have proper infrastructure, hospitality, and awareness to deal with such accidents.
Home Accident: Accidents that occur at home. Kitchens, stairways, and bathrooms pose a threat to human safety at home. Falls, burns, and poisoning are some of the most common causes of accidents at home. Falls are common among kids and older individuals. Inadequate supervision and negligence are some of the critical factors that increase the risk of accidents at home.
