Tesla Is Already Installing Production Equipment At Gigafactory 3 In China
Tesla Inc. has already begun installing production equipment at its Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, China whose construction began only in December 2018.
The construction pace at the Gigafactory has been remarkable. Construction of the massive building is almost complete and is expected to be completed in a few months. Tesla announced the deal to build Gigafactory 3 with the Shanghai municipal government only in October 2018. Groundbreaking for the plant, which was attended by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, took place in January.
The entire Gigafactory 3 complex has a size of 865,000 square meters. The project contractor is China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Co., Ltd., a unit of state-owned China State Construction Engineering.
Gigafactory 3 will produce the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, as well as the complicated electric battery packs for these electric vehicles (EVs).
At Tesla's shareholder’s meeting last week in California, Musk said Gigafactory 3 is on schedule to complete construction by this summer. Musk believes Gigafactory 3 is the fastest built car manufacturing facility.
Musk revealed Tesla is already installing production equipment including “stamping machines, and the paint shop.”
New videos and photos spreading online show the building of the mammoth electric vehicle factory almost complete.
Over the next few months, Tesla will have installed hundreds of millions of dollars worth of production equipment capable of producing thousands of Model 3s per week. Musk said Tesla wants to produce 3,000 Model 3s per week at Gigafactory 3 by the end of this year.
At the Tesla Factory in Fremont, California, Tesla is trying to stabilize production at 7,000 EVs per week.
Tesla will thus produce a total of 10,000 Model 3s per week at both the Tesla Factory and at Gigafactory 3 by the end of the year -- if things work out as planned.
Tesla previously said that they updated the production layout designed for Gigafactory 3 to be more optimized.
