Tesla, the American electric vehicle company owned by Elon Musk, announced on Thursday the launch of its own tequila, which is inspired by its CEO’s controversial April Fool’s Day joke.
The April Fool’s joke, posted by Musk on Twitter, claimed the company went bankrupt and that its CEO was found “passed out” and surrounded by “Teslaquilla” bottles, The Verge reported.
“Elon was found passed out against a Tesla Model 3, surrounded by "Teslaquilla" bottles, the tracks of dried tears still visible on his cheeks,” the tweet read.
The company filed a trademark for “Teslaquila” following the post, but nothing came of it until Thursday.
Tesla Tequila is marketed as an “exclusive, small-batch premium” drink that’s made from 100% sustainable highland and lowland agaves. The Teslaquila, which has been aged for 15 months, comes in a hand-blown glass bottle shaped like lightning, the marketing copy read.
Every 750 ml bottle comes with a price tag of $250, shipping included. Tesla Tequila will only be available in the U.S.
Tequila is subject to strict rules that say it must be manufactured in one of five permitted Mexican states. Teslaquila was produced in collaboration with Nosotros Tequila — a California-based brand that sources its agave in the Western Mexican state of Jalisco.
While Tesla is the first automaker to sell liquor, Musk isn't the first celebrity to own its own tequila brand, according to The Drinks Business.
Dwayne Johnson, famously known as “The Rock,” launched Teremana, a gluten-free tequila that consists of 96 calories for every 1.5 oz. IT was developed by Siete Bucks Spirits, which was co-founded by Johnson, longtime business partner Dany Garcia, and spirit industry experts Jenna Fagnan and Ken Austin.
British singer Rita Ora also moved into the tequila business in April 2019, after joining forces with Conecuh Brands to launch her own liquor, Prospero. The spirit is available in three variants, Blanco, Reposado, and Anejo.
The Backstreet Boys also revealed plans to launch a new tequila during an interview with Tasting Table in 2018. The launch date has yet to be revealed.
