Tesla Model 3 Beats Gas-Powered Supercar In Drag Race [Watch]

You almost pity this poor gasoline-powered Toyota Supra brave enough to race against three of the fastest sports car electric vehicles (EVs) on the planet.

There are lots of YouTube videos depicting the Tesla Model 3, the Audi e-tron and the Jaguar I-Pace in all their glory. And there are also videos showing EVs -- especially Teslas -- beating their gasoline cousins in one-sided drag races.

One of the newest drag racing videos is from U.K. car website “carwow” showing all these three EVs pitted against a lone Toyota Supra in three side-by-side races. The first was a quarter mile drag race from a standing start; the second, a rolling race from 50 mph; while the third was a braking test to find out which car could stop the fastest.

The Toyota Supra in the video draws power from a turbocharged 3.0 liter straight six generating 340 horsepower and 369 foot-pound of torque. This racing machine has an eight-speed automatic gearbox and rear-wheel drive. It weighs 3,440 pounds.

The Tesla Model 3 Performance came to this drag race with a 75kWh battery, 450 horsepower and 472 foot-pound of torque. It has all-wheel drive and dual motors. It weighs over 3,600 pounds, making it the lightest EV in this drag race.

The Jaguar I-Pace has dual motors, a 90kWh batter and all-wheel drive. It generates 400 hp and 516 foot-pounds of torque. It weighs a beefy 4,400 pounds.

The Audi e-tron’s electric motors generate 406 hp and 490 foot-pounds of torque from a 95kWh battery and dual motors. It has all-wheel drive but weighs-in at a hefty 5,000 pounds.

Based purely on specs, the Toyota Supra came into race the underdog. It was inferior in horsepower and torque. Being a rear-wheel drive machinis another minus against all three of its EV rivals that sport all-wheel drive.

The big plus for the Supra was that it was the lighests of all four sports cars.

Given all this, how did the race go? The Supra won none of the three contests but did surprise with its performance against the EVs. Note, the Supra was expected to wind-up last in all these races.

The Model 3 won standard quarter mile in 11.8 seconds. The Jaguar I-Pace took second with 12.6 seconds. Surprisingly, the Supra came in third at 12.8 seconds while the Audi e-tron brought up the rear with 13.5 seconds.

The rolling race was also won by the Model 3. The Supra was second, the I-Pace third and the e-tron last.

The braking test saw the Tesla victorious yet again. The Supra came in second, the I-Pace, third and the e-tron, fourth.

The e-tron was the heaviest machine at 5,500 pounds and this single factor seems to explains much of its unsatisfying performance in the three tests.
