The battle of the electric pickups have already begun, way before the actual pickups in question have actually made an official appearance or introduction.

On one end is Elon Musk’s Tesla pickup, making waves with only an obscure teaser for analysts and fans to consider. Amping up the wait are statements that only someone like Musk is capable of pulling off, describing the Tesla pickup as a “cyberpunk” machine that would fit right in place in a “Blade Runner” movie.

On the other is the Ford F-150 electric pickup. The brand is backed with over 40 years of dominance as the choice pickup brand of the American market. The Ford F-150 is a reliable beast and that alone is hard to beat.

Somewhere in between is the Rivian, which also aims to compete along with the two giant brands. But who are we kidding? This battle of the best electric pickup trucks is mostly for Tesla and Ford and anyone who’s been following the two electric vehicles knows that the competition is going to be an exciting one in the coming months.

But how does the two fare against each other? IBTimes try to size up the two and here’s what we came up with:

In terms of design, Tesla might have the upper hand simply because we know the new Tesla pickup is going to be really interesting. Considering its cyberpunk design, the new EV is expected to stand out in the road whether it's rural or in the city. Various interpretations courtesy of concept designs, such as the badass concept from Turkish designer Emre Husmen, have already teased this.

Husmen released his vision of the pickup in his Behance account and it shows a highly modern and futuristic pickup that got fans of Tesla really excited. A new design from Justin Duel James (Duelj), who was able to incorporate the teaser image as part of the truck, is also quite impressive.

As for Ford, based on the recent video released to showcase its amazing towing capabilities, the design would run somewhere along with the classic look that the brand has been known for. The silhouette remains strong and imposing, something that loyal pickup owners might still go for in the end.

Even Tesla’s CEO admits that the pickup design might be something that won’t appeal to the general customers and the EV company might still come up with a conventional design instead.

For towing capabilities, this is where Ford truly shines. In a video released early this week, the prototype electric pickup of Ford showcased the outstanding capabilities of its truck by pulling a total weight of around 1.25 million pounds composed of double-decker rail cars carrying 42 F-150 pickups.

This is a far cry from the initially impressive 300,000 pounds claim which Musk tweeted about the Tesla pickup. Ford, however, was quick to clarify that the video was simply a demonstration of capability and “far beyond any production truck’s published capacity.”

“This demonstration showcases our commitment to remain the clear leader in trucks as well as to highlight our commitment to the future of electric vehicles,” Ted Cannis, Ford global director of electrification, said in a report.

For the price, Musk said that the Tesla pickup will be somewhere along with the price range of $50,000 while Ford’s premium electric vehicle could go up to as much as $60,000 to $70,000. This goes to show that both pickups seem evenly matched, making the battle of the EVs seem more exciting in the days to come.
