A 67-year-old East Texas man was facing charges after the police found the body of his adult son in the kitchen of their house.
The New Boston Police Department said the man's son died four years ago. The grim discovery was made by the officers, who were called to the house of David McMichael in the 1200 block of South Merrill Street for a welfare check, Tuesday, The Dallas Morning News reported.
A statement by the police department said a caller requested a welfare check on a "male subject." However, the identity of the caller was not revealed.
Upon arrival at the home, the officers came in contact with the father of the person they were asked to do a welfare check on, Fort Worth Star Telegram reported. They reportedly asked David whether he knew why they were there, to which he answered it was because he had a body in the kitchen. He added his son Jason McMichael had died in May 2018.
An immediate search was conducted, and the skeletal remains of a man were found in the kitchen. Though the body appeared to be of Jason, the remains were sent for further examination. It was not clear how he died or how long his remains were in the home. His cause of death has also not been ascertained yet.
The police added the body has been released to Mid-South Transport and taken to the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas for autopsy and further identification.
David was immediately taken into custody without incident on a charge of abuse of a corpse. His bail had not been set Wednesday evening, and it was unclear whether he had an attorney present, the report added.
Recently, an elderly man’s decomposing remains were found amidst a pile of garbage inside a Brooklyn apartment. Reports said the man's wife planned to wait a year before reporting his death. The police said Elizabeth Shapiro, 72, had not called 911 after her husband, Brent Shapiro, 84, died of arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The authorities believe Brent died at least two months before they discovered his body during a wellness check. The incident came to light after the couple’s worried sons, aged 45 and 41, had called 911, and asked the authorities to check on their parents. They described the couple as mentally ill and said they hadn’t met them since 2019.
