Houston, Texas -- A man allegedly shot and killed his wife's boyfriend after she brought him to a restaurant where the former couple was meeting to discuss their divorce.
The incident took place Wednesday in Crab Station restaurant in Texas' Harris County. Following the shooting, the man fled the restaurant. When the cops closed in on him, he turned the gun on himself.
The 61-year-old is currently in a critical condition in a hospital.
Harris County Sheriff’s Office Major Susan Cotter said in a statement Thursday the 29-year-old woman was with her 40-year-old boyfriend at the restaurant when the husband arrived. The sheriff's office has not released the names of the people involved.
The shooting took place around 11.55 a.m. ET after a discussion over the terms of their divorce turned violent.
"They spoke in the restaurant for about 20 minutes and the conversation, we’re told, did not go well," Cotter said.
At some point, the husband got irked and stormed out, only to return again with a gun and spray bullets into the victim's body, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
The suspect fired 13 rounds at the victim, killing him on the spot. The man allegedly tried to shoot his wife as well, but missed. He then drove off from the spot, but authorities were able to track his vehicle down in a parking lot south of the restaurant. Seeing the officers approach, the man shot himself, KHOU 11 reported.
"We don’t expect him to survive," Cotter said in her statement. The couple were married for nine years and have no children together, Click 2 Houston reported.
The family of the victim has identified him as Maurenzo Smith, a professional boxer who was scheduled to travel to Colombia next week for a match. Smith's family told KHOU 11 he had just met the woman, and they weren't dating.
Janice Solarie, a neighbor who lived near the couple, told ABC 13 they were happy until things took a turn for the worse. Solarie identified them as Steven Harris and Rebecca, describing Harris as a kind, considerate neighbor and a loving man.
"We had some other things happen in the neighborhood, and (Rebecca) was kind of concerned and (Steven) put his arms around her and he patted her and I thought, 'Wow, that was very, very soft and tender," said Solarie. "If you talk to any of the neighbors, they would tell you, they would be in utter shock."
