A San Antonio man was killed Tuesday in what police said they suspected to be a targeted shooting.

Police said the shooting took place around 1 p.m. near a laundromat in the Cattleman Square district of San Antonio. Witnesses told police several loud bangs were heard followed by a vehicle speeding off with multiple people inside, though no one could reportedly identify the passengers or the car they fled in.

One of the witnesses, identified as Jessica Garcia, said she knew the victim by the nickname “Joker” and saw him drive by a store.

“Watch the cars, Mijo,” she told MySanAntonio that she yelled to the man. “He’s like, ‘I know Mom,’ and he kept going. Five minutes later — boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.”

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but was declared dead shortly after arriving.

Police taped off the area to begin its investigation when an unidentified man tried entering the scene. He was detained for trying to enter the crime scene but released after police confirmed he was not involved in the shooting.

Alisia Pruneda, a spokeswoman for the San Antonio Police Department, told reporters it was too early to say what the motivation was for the shooting or if it may have been gang-related. However, she did say the victim appeared to be “very targeted” by the alleged shooters.
