A Texas mother shot and killed her three children before committing suicide days after finalizing her divorce.

The bodies Ashley Auzenne, 39, and her children -- Parrish, 11, Eleanor, 9, and Lincoln, 7 -- were found in their Deer Park home after worried relatives asked police to perform a welfare check.

“They were kids you wanted to have around. They really were,” the children’s grandfather, Murvin Auzenne Sr., told Houston ABC-affiliate, KTRK. “They played well, they talked to the adults. They're amazing children in all kinds of fantastic ways.”

The Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the deaths a murder-suicide after completing autopsies Thursday. The office also named the mother as the primary suspect.

The apparent murder-suicide comes days after Ashley Auzenne finalized her divorce from Murvin Auzenne Jr., according to court documents obtained by KTRK. Ashley Auzenne initiated the divorce action, the documents showed.

“Ashley tried her best to be a good mother,” Auzenne Jr. said. “She and I had our issues, we argued and fought just like any other couple headed for divorce, but I never had any reason to believe she was capable of this. Nobody did.”

Grief counseling was to be available for students at Bonnette Junior High and Deer Park Elementary schools, where the children attended classes.
