At least three persons died and another was injured after a plane crashed on the runway at Coulter Field Airport in Bryan, Texas, on Sunday afternoon.

Federal Aviation spokesperson Lynn Lunsford told the Associated Press that the single-engine Piper PA24 went down shortly before 2.30 p.m. local time (3.30 p.m. EDT). The crash will be investigated by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board. The investigators were expected to arrive at the scene Monday morning and people were asked to avoid the area until then. The airport is owned by the City of Bryan.

Though the identities of the victims were not revealed, KBTX reported that the three victims were family members – a couple and their daughter who was a senior at Texas A&M University. The survivor, who was also a student of the same university, was rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital where he was listed in critical condition. His relation to the family was not known.

Amber Craven, a local resident, spoke to KPRC and said she was at home when the incident took place.

"We were just watching a movie. We heard like some noise and we didn’t even pay no mind to it. We heard a helicopter and we still didn’t pay no mind to it," she said.

"It was a lot of fire trucks and a lot of cops. A lot of cars were stopping and looking that way," she said.

"It’s scary to think three people are really not here anymore. You don’t know why or what could have happened. I wish they all would have made it out," Craven told the channel.

Investigation was ongoing and the cause of the crash was not known.

The incident comes months after a single-engine aircraft crashed on the grounds of a school in northern Santa Barbara County, California, killing the pilot. The plane, which was headed to Santa Maria, crashed onto the basketball courts of Ralph Dunlap Elementary School after it took off from Van Nuys Airport. Luckily, nobody was on the school campus during the crash.
